Graduate Strategy Analyst

Based in: Based in Solihull (Hybrid working with potential travel between sites)

Position overview:

Sembcorp is growing rapidly and expanding into many new areas to reach our goal of becoming a leading provider of sustainable solutions as we work to achieve net-zero.

This growth means Sembcorp is investigating all decarbonisation technology options to support our strategic goals.

The role holder will have focus on developing options to decarbonise Sembcorp’s power generation assets. The role holder will also need to make recommendations on options to increase Sembcorp’s contribution to net-zero through participating in wider decarbonisation projects beyond power generation.

This role will focus on developing detailed commercial analysis of the global markets in which our Wilton industrial customers operate to help us offer them decarbonisation solutions for their utility needs.

There will be a specific focus on supporting the development of a hydrogen strategy for Sembcorp that aligns with the projects already proposed in Teesside and across the UK.

Collaboration is key for this role, both within the business and throughout the wider industry. The holder will be expected to lead on generating decarbonisation prospects and building the case for investment.

This role would suit a person who is at an early stage in their career (or at the commencement of their career) having undertaken degree studies related to the job specification - as it provides significant opportunity to develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the challenges around decarbonisation of the energy sector.

Key responsibilities:

Conducting research on prospective strategic decarbonisation opportunities and presenting proposals for investment to senior leaders

Conducting analysis of the commercial markets in which Sembcorp’s industrial customer operate to allow us to offer our customers economically efficient decarbonisation options.

Assisting on the development of a hydrogen strategy for all Sembcorp assets working with teams from across the business to assess suitability, commercial viability and timelines

Supporting analysis of M&A opportunities and building investment opportunities across a wide range of low-carbon technologies

Actively communicating and collaborating with all Sembcorp functions (engineering and operations colleagues and trading colleagues) in support of the investigation of prospective opportunities

Building and utilising an extensive industry network that places Sembcorp at the centre of decarbonisation activity in the UK

Contributing to Sembcorp broader strategy formulation - developing detailed knowledge of sectors and potential areas to target growth

Keeping up to date with government updates and wider decarbonisation-related media to determine potential impacts on Sembcorp’s strategy

Being an advocate for Sembcorp’s decarbonisation strategy internally and externally

Maintaining relationships with stakeholders from across industry, government, Ofgem and also with all internal Sembcorp stakeholders in the UK and in other overseas markets.

Essential

Experience of working for a consultancy offering low-carbon strategies and solutions to power generation industry.

Understanding of some of the economics and engineering aspects of power generation, hydrogen and low carbon generation.

Experience of working within more than one organisation would be desirable to bring a wider perspective to the role but is not essential.

Understanding of, and experience in, the water industry would also be beneficial.

Hands-on experience of the developing hydrogen sector and an understanding of the inputs, outputs and commercial aspects of this sector.

Experience of supporting commercial transaction discussions in terms of analysis and the gate stage project approval process.
