Infrastructure Engineer / 3rd Line Support Server Engineer - Strong Wintel / VMWare EXP – Surrey / Hybrid / WFH
£40,000 + £4-5,000 oncall / overtime, plus excellent benefits and growth potential (fantastic employer) / Surrey – albeit 1, possibly 2 days per week in the office
This role is a hybrid position and can be based in either their Basingstoke (Hampshire) or Dorking (Surrey) offices with the expectation of being in the office 4 - 8 times per month.
A leading financial services company are recruiting for a Server Engineer (Infrastructure Engineer / 3rd Line Support Engineer) within their infrastructure team, this is a great role working in a team where career progression is actively encouraged. Ideally you will possess core skills within Wintel / VMware technologies, with any knowledge of Nutanix or the willingness to learn new technology being well received.
The primary day to day work for the Infrastructure Engineer / 3rd Line Support Server Engineer will consist of the following:
* 3rd Line / Server level Break / Fix – Infrastructure Support – BAU engagements.
* Monitoring and triaging the infrastructure ticket queue consisting of Incidents, Requests and Change from IT Teams and the business for infrastructure systems, ensuring they are resolved or escalated in a timely manner.
The makeup of Infrastructure ticket queue work can be varied and will require participation in some of the following areas as and when required to support the 3rd line engineers:
* Installation, configuration, and maintenance of windows, Linux ( only 5 to 10% of their estate) and some cloud (minimal) server\ systems.
* Technical responsibility for the implementation, modification, enhancement, and ongoing support of server operating systems i.e. Windows and Linux server. Along with the software tools and infrastructure applications required to manage the relevant infrastructure.
* Review infrastructure security vulnerabilities and implement patch deployment, via security packs and packages as needed.
* Maintaining Enterprise monitoring systems such as SCOM, CheckMK (Nagios) etc. Developing monitors, dashboards, escalations and alerts.
* Act as a resource to resolve complex system problems affecting business applications and computing services.
* Explore and identify opportunities for future implementation of automation.
* At times there may be a need to assist with more complex 3rd line technical work assistance for existing and future infrastructure technologies.
Technical Team Interaction for the Infrastructure Engineer / 3rd Line Support Server Engineer will include:
* Assist Development teams in provisioning systems and resources.
* Supporting Application teams where needed for implementing software updates to core business systems following ITIL processes.
* Work with Associate Engineers to remediate operational issues related to onboarding / offboarding processes.
Required Skillset for the Infrastructure Engineer / 3rd Line Support Server Engineer position:
* Possess significantly developed hands-on technical expertise in multiple key operating systems or subsystem areas.
* Have some experience in creating as well as using scripting and other tools to automate routine tasks - Ability to automate manual tasks using scripting languages (e.g. shell, python, perl, bash).
* Drive resolution of technical problems in a methodical and professional manner.
* Effectively summarise and clearly communicate software/hardware problems involving multiple support teams.
* Demonstrable related work experience (Wintel, VMWare) – any experience with Nutanix Converged technologies, including Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor or AHV.
And Have Experience Of:
* Windows OS Configuring & Trouble shooting 2016, 2019 and 2022 (nice to have).
* VMware Virtualisation 6.5+.
* AD / DNS / GPO configuration.
* ITIL Framework grounding (Incident, Change, etc).
* Azure/Cloud exposure (Not essential).
* Any scripting knowledge is an advantage.
