Role: Project Design Authority
Location: Crawley / Hybrid

Morson Talent are currently looking to recruit an experienced Project Design Authority to join our client, Thales within Military Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS). This is a great opportunity for an experienced aviation/aeronautical Systems Engineer to join the Design, Airworthiness and Safety team working directly for the Design Authority on current and future military UAS opportunities.

Within this role, you will work in all stages of the design lifecycle including bids, in-service/support phase and earlier design stages such as requirements review, solution architecture development, design verification, T&E and customer acceptance. You will be responsible for the system design meeting the customer requirements including legislative safety and airworthiness requirements.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

Provide technical leadership on bids identifying and proposing solutions, working with sub-contractors and preparing technical bid documentation.
Provide day-to-day technical guidance and support to other stakeholders across a wide variety of technical areas in support of the in service system and its future modification & upgrade programme as directed by the PDA.
Liaison and working with platform and sensor OEMs to deliver the solution.
Deputise for the DA as necessary at relevant technical meetings (internal and external).
Act as a technical point of contact with DE&S Delivery Team Type Airworthiness Authority and user community.
Translating customer requirements into engineering/technical requirements to enable development and sub-contracting activities to commence.
Responsible for the technical quality and correctness of various aspects of the Aircraft Document Set (ADS) (IETP, Aircrew Manual, etc).
Alert and escalate technical issues to the appropriate route.
Detailed analytical analysis of specific technical problem reports and propose candidate solutions.
Trials Liaison – preparing Request for Test (RFT), Technical Notes (TN) and analysis of post flight data.
Rigorously review engineering plans and estimates to ensure the desired output and reduce delivery risks to a manageable level both in terms of cost and timescale.
Technical review of documentation from the engineering team to ensure quality and consistency with the solution.
Undertake all work activities in line with Thales processes to consistently deliver business commitments.
Produce, present, maintain and defend design validation documents to enable correct governance.
Focus on the quality of what we deliver to the customer, be proactive and look at continually improving the way we work

Skills
Essential

An aeronautical/aviation engineering background
A sound understanding of System Engineering principles
Ability to undertake analytical analysis
Understanding of aviation design/operational safety and airworthiness processes.
An understanding of multidisciplinary engineering environments with expertise in one aspect and working across the whole product lifecycle, with an emphasis on In-Service support of aviation.
Capable of undertaking design trade off studies
Strong MS Office skill
Strong understanding of Aviation Safety Management Systems
Desirable

An appreciation of land ISTAR
Ability to use recognised engineering tools such as DOORS, JIRA, etc
A deep understanding of at least one of:
Airworthiness
High Integrity level software
Aerodynamics and control of air vehicles
Electro-optic payloads
Airborne radar
RF Data links
Airborne Mission systems

Experience:
Essential

Previous experience working in the regulated aerospace industry (MAA/CAA/EASA)
Type airworthiness principles and practices.
Systems Engineering principles and practices.
Technical leadership of bid teams.
Batchelor degree or higher with honours in an Engineering Discipline
Desirable

Aircraft Systems design, airworthiness, T&E
Involvement in the creation and maintenance of the Aircraft Document Set (ADS).
Interaction with CFAOS/CAMO/MAOS and other DAOS/Pt 21J design organisations.
Working with the military end user and products
Airworthiness of Military Aircraft – Cranfield University
Other relevant airworthiness or T&E qualifications

Initially, the successful candidate will be appointed as a Deputy PDA until they are deemed to meet the Thales DAOS competency requirements for PDA approval
